New York Launches Voluntary Self-Exclusion Support Program

New Yorkers who think they might have a gambling problem and want to voluntarily prohibit themselves from using retail and online betting platforms should have an easier time doing so, using a new initiative announced Monday by the New York Council on Problem Gambling.

Launched in partnership with the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Support (OASAS) and the New York State Gaming Commission, the free Voluntary Self-Exclusion Support Program (VSE) will connect people who seek to stop themselves from gambling with an NYCPG staff member. In turn, the staffer will explain the self-exclusion process, assist the individual with filling out the proper paperwork to be added to the state’s list, and connect them with problem gambling treatment and peer support providers.

“Assisting those in need of help through providing care and concern is at the core of what NYCPG does, and the launch of this new program exemplifies that care and concern by breaking down barriers,” NYCPG Executive Director James Maney said in a press release. “The new online notary services make it easier for individuals to complete remote VSE, while also connecting to one of our caring staff members who are knowledgeable about the process.”

‘Mitigating further harm’

According to a 2020 survey conducted by OASAS, 4.4% of New York adults are at risk for developing a gambling problem, while an additional 0.7% already meet the criteria for problem gambling or a gambling disorder. Individuals who elect to voluntarily self-exclude are barred from participating in any gambling activity in the state, including casino wagering and sports betting.

“OASAS oversees a robust system of prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery services for those affected by addiction across the state, including problem gambling,” said OASAS Commissioner Dr. Chinazo Cunningham. “Voluntary self-exclusion can be an effective prevention strategy to reduce gambling harms, and this new support program not only provides a way for people to complete the self-exclusion process, but also offers an opportunity to connect to OASAS local problem gambling community support services to assist in mitigating further harm.”

New York State Gaming Commission Executive Director Robert Williams added, “The Gaming Commission is committed to ensuring that licensed facilities operate in responsible and sensitive matters for those who need help. The New York Council on Problem Gambling’s VSE Support Program provides those individuals with the knowledge and resources to make the best decisions for their welfare.”

The NYCPG’s Voluntary Self-Exclusion Support Program can be reached at [email protected] or 518-903-0217. Those seeking help for problem gambling can call the OASAS 24/7 HOPEline at 1-877-846-7369, text HOPENY (467369), or visit NYProblemGamblingHelp.org.
