Attorney Questions Why Iowa Betting Investigation Targeted Athletes

An attorney representing former Iowa State running back Jirehl Brock filed a discovery motion Thursday in hopes of retrieving more information about how Brock was investigated for sports betting violations.

The attorney, Matthew Boles, alleges that hundreds of college students were investigated for illegal sports betting in Iowa, but only a handful of student-athletes were targeted with punishments.

Brock is one of several former Iowa State athletes to legally challenge the investigations that led to criminal charges and suspensions for numerous Iowa and Iowa State athletes in the summer of 2023. Earlier this week, attorneys representing wrestler Paniro Johnson and football lineman Isaiah Lee accused Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agents of conducting an unlawful search of student-athletes who committed wagering violations.

Boles is claiming much of the same, referencing the allegations in those lawsuits. The allegations stem largely from a Jan. 19 deposition of DCI Agents Mark Ludwig and Brian Sanger.

In those depositions, the attorneys say Ludwig admitted he felt uncomfortable about the legality and credibility of the investigation. Additionally, the three lawyers say that Sanger used geolocation services to monitor the betting app activity of their clients without a warrant.

Boles also wonders why the DCI agents monitored the betting activity of hundreds of college students but then decided to pursue charges against the athletes involved with the investigation.

Brock left Iowa State’s football team ahead of the 2023 college football season due to his alleged wagering violations. He was the team’s leading rusher in 2022 and a projected starter ahead of the 2023 season.
