Allwyn the new operator for the lottery

The UK National Lottery marks a milestone today as Allwyn takes over as its new operator, the transition marks the first time the game has changed hands since its launch almost 30 years ago. With a fresh ad campaign and a renewed focus on the original Lotto game, Allwyn aims to provide a seamless experience for players while increasing returns to National Lottery-funded projects.

The Gambling Commission, Allwyn, Camelot, and the government have been working to ensure a smooth handover of the National Lottery operations. The commission’s executive director for the fourth National Lottery competition, John Tanner, assures players that they will not notice any immediate changes. Whether purchasing a ticket for the Saturday draw or trying their luck with a scratch card, players can continue enjoying the game as they always have.

However, over time, Allwyn plans to roll out changes that are expected to lead to higher returns to good causes. Justin King, the chairman of Allwyn UK, expresses the company’s commitment to increasing returns to National Lottery-funded projects and building a legacy of change for good over the next decade.

Allwyn aims to ensure that players notice little difference in their overall experience with the National Lottery. Planned maintenance has been ongoing behind the scenes, and ticket sales are expected to operate as usual. Allwyn’s focus, as the new operator, is on maintaining the integrity of the game while exploring opportunities for improvement.

Although Allwyn had plans to introduce new draw-based games, these have been delayed until 2025 due to legal complications surrounding the handover. This delay will impact sales and the amount of money that can be contributed to good causes in the early years of Allwyn’s 10-year license.

Andria Vidler, the recently-appointed UK boss of Allwyn, acknowledges that the company will not be able to make the significant changes it had originally planned until the following year. However, Allwyn remains committed to doubling the amount of money for good causes in the long term, even if it falls short of its early years’ targets.

While players may not immediately notice any major differences, Allwyn plans to gradually introduce changes to the National Lottery. This includes the introduction of new scratch cards and the implementation of limits on the number of scratch cards that can be purchased in shops and online. Starting from February 1, players will be limited to buying a maximum of 10 scratch cards at any given time online. Similar limits will be implemented across retailers later in the year to prevent vulnerable individuals from overindulging.

Allwyn is also reviewing its original promise to halve the price of a lottery ticket from £2 to £1. Andria Vidler explains that players can expect to see gradual changes implemented over the next year, with a focus on enhancing the lottery experience and maximizing contributions to good causes.

Allwyn’s primary goal as the new operator of the National Lottery is to increase returns to National Lottery-funded projects. This commitment extends to various initiatives, including mental health services, heritage and arts preservation, and support for Olympians and Paralympians. The National Lottery has a proven track record of positively impacting the lives of millions, and Allwyn aims to continue this legacy.
