Weather-Shortened PGA Tour Event Sparks Sports Betting Debate

With heavy winds and rain forecast to hit the California coast Sunday, some bettors began placing online sports bets Saturday evening on the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with the consideration that the tournament could be shortened to 54 holes.

It appeared some bettors were hopeful they could wager on third-round leader Wyndham Clark to win the event and cash in, should the event be shortened. Using similar logic, other bettors placed parlays featuring bets on players to finish inside the Top 5, 10, and 20. The tournament had yet to be officially shortened to 54 holes as of Saturday evening.

The tournament was ultimately shortened to 54 holes, with the official announcement coming Sunday night at 9:15 p.m. ET. Tournament officials had delayed the start multiple times Sunday, and even announced a Monday finish, before deciding to call the event after 54 holes. With Sunday’s round washed out and the tournament eventually declared final after three rounds, Clark was the winner.

Unfortunately for bettors, wagers placed on Clark following the third round were declared void by several sportsbooks, including DraftKings and FanDuel.

“The wagers were settled in accordance with FanDuel house rules,” a FanDuel spokesperson told Sports Handle. “All bets placed after the completion of the 3rd round were voided, and all 72 hole match bets were voided because 72 holes were not completed. All other bets were settled based on results because they are action once 36 holes have passed.”

FanDuel’s house rules include a line that says “if a tournament is shortened and FanDuel Sportsbook settles the tournament markets, then all bets matched after the last completed round will be void.” Essentially, wagers placed on the PGA Tour’s Pebble Beach event following the completion of Saturday’s third round were voided because the final round didn’t occur.

DraftKings cited a similar house rule to frustrated bettors, with the operator’s customer service team telling multiple bettors on social media that bets placed after a certain time Saturday night were voided. Bets placed prior to the conclusion of the third round were graded.

As for pre-tournament bets, most sportsbooks include language in their house rules saying any tournament that goes at least 36 holes can be deemed official.

Bets on Clark to win outright during the opening rounds of the tournament or before the event were graded as winning bets. If a bettor placed a pre-tournament winner bet on Ludvig Aberg, who finished in second place one shot behind Clark, their bet is a loser. It’s bad luck for those bettors, but the technicality is covered by house rules posted on each sports betting app.

One bettor confirmed with Sports Handle that their 65-1 ticket on Clark to win prior to the tournament was officially deemed a winner by DraftKings.
