因揭露美國政府的大規模監控計劃而聞名的前 NSA 僱員 Edward Snowden 推文指出：
我預測有一個國家正在買入黃金的現代替代品「比特幣」，但他們並未公開披露此事，而這會在今年被揭露。
對於此預測，有加密社群開玩笑表示，政府將大量印鈔以買入比特幣。
而鑑於 Snowden 過往曾揭露美國監控計劃，他在文中提到「被揭露」一詞，也讓人懷疑他是否又要跳出來爆料。
