Kappa Research revealed that seven out of ten Greeks engage in online gambling, while only 5% visit traditional brick-and-mortar casinos.

One of the primary reasons for the surge in online gambling in Greece is the convenience and accessibility it provides. With just a few clicks, players can access a wide range of games and betting options from the comfort of their own homes. Unlike traditional casinos, online platforms are available 24/7, allowing individuals to indulge in their favourite games at any time that suits them.

Another factor contributing to the popularity of online gambling is the vast selection of games available. Online platforms offer a wide range of options, including slot machines, poker, blackjack, roulette, and sports betting. This variety appeals to different preferences and interests, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

Online gambling platforms often entice players with attractive bonuses and promotions. These incentives can include welcome bonuses, free spins, cashback offers, and loyalty programs. Such rewards add value to the gambling experience and can significantly impact a player’s decision to choose online gambling over traditional casinos.

Online gambling also provides a level of anonymity and privacy that may be appealing to some players. Unlike traditional casinos, where individuals may feel self-conscious or uncomfortable, online platforms allow players to enjoy their favourite games without worrying about judgment or scrutiny from others.

While online gambling offers many advantages, it is essential to acknowledge the impact of illegal gambling in Greece. The Kappa Research study revealed that more than 1.7 billion euros were wagered through illegal networks in 2023, with alarming statistics showing that 10% of these players were aged between 17 and 21. This highlights the issue of underage gambling and the need for stricter regulations and enforcement.

Illegal gambling can have severe consequences for individuals, both financially and psychologically. The thrill of gambling combined with easy access to online platforms can lead to addictive behaviours and significant financial losses. Recognizing the signs of gambling addiction and providing support and resources for affected individuals is crucial in addressing this issue.

To combat illegal gambling, there have been calls for the creation of a new body involving representatives from judicial authorities, the police, the banking system, scientific personnel, and market players. This collaborative approach aims to act swiftly and discourage players from engaging in illegal activities by educating them about the risks and consequences.

The Greek government has taken steps to regulate the online gambling industry, ensuring consumer protection and responsible gambling practices. In 2011, Greece implemented a licensing framework that required online gambling operators to obtain a license from the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP). This framework aimed to establish a legal and regulated market, providing a safer environment for players.
