NFL Reinstates 5 Players Suspended For Gambling, But Rodgers Sr. Remains Inactive

The NFL reinstated five players suspended for violations of the league’s gambling policy, even as former Indianapolis Colts defensive back Isaiah Rodgers Sr. remains inactive.

Last June, the NFL suspended Rodgers for the 2023-24 season after Sports Handle reported that the former Colts corner placed hundreds of bets on sports, including at least one on his own team. Rodgers also made a four-figure wager on a Colts’ rushing yards total, one later revealed as the over on Jonathan Taylor yards in a game.

Now a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, Rodgers’ return remains under review, ESPN reported on Thursday. Rodgers applied for reinstatement last month, a source told Sports Handle on the condition of anonymity.

The NFL reinstated Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney, as well as four free agents who placed bets during the 2022-23 NFL season. Toney, a 2021 seventh-round pick, has recorded 1.5 sacks in two seasons with the Commanders.

The league also reinstated three former Lions players, wide receiver Quintez Cephus, safety C.J. Moore and defensive end Demetrius Taylor.

A fifth, former Colts defensive end Rashod Berry, was released by the Indianapolis last year.

All five violated the NFL’s sports betting policy by placing wagers on NFL events.

The NFL made the announcement Thursday one day after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued a lifetime ban against former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter. A two-way player with the franchise, Porter placed at least 13 bets on NBA games using an associate’s online betting account, the league said in a statement.

Porter also placed millions in wagers on a FanDuel VIP account, Sports Handle and The Action Network reported.

Porter’s transgressions appear to be considerably more flagrant than the accusations levied against Rodgers. Over a three-month period through March, Porter’s wagers returned a total payout of $76,059, according to the NBA, resulting in net winnings of $21,965.

Porter also placed a multi-game parlay that included a leg on the Raptors to lose, the NBA wrote in the statement. The former University of Missouri center did not appear in the game.

It should be noted that the NFL never accused Rodgers of placing wagers against his own team.

After a rash of player-betting suspensions, the NFL modified its sports betting policy last September. A player who is caught making a bet inside an NFL locker room will now face a two-game suspension for his first offense.

Under a previous rule, NFL players faced a six-game suspension for the violation. A player caught making a bet on his own team will now face a two-year suspension under stricter punishments from the league.

Rodgers apologized to his former teammates for his transgressions, but later noted that he placed the bets for several friends. The individuals, according to Rodgers, lived in Florida where sports betting was illegal at the time.

In his first public comments on the case, Rodgers told ESPN’s Outside the Lines that he took full responsibility for his actions.

“At the end of the day I knew the rules, I wasn’t supposed to do it, and I got to take what comes with it,” Rodgers said in February.
