Connecticut Lawmakers Consider In-State College Betting Rule Change

Connecticut lawmakers are considering a notable change to the state’s sports betting regulations.

Legislation to tweak the state’s gambling laws was officially introduced on April 4 through
File 271, and the proposal would allow wagering on in-state college programs like UConn.

Currently, Connecticut bettors can only wager on UConn or other college teams when they place tournament futures bets for intercollegiate tournaments involving in-state teams.

The state’s colleges are largely neutral on the proposal, according to NBC Connecticut. Given the incredible play from UConn’s men’s and women’s programs in recent seasons — the men’s team has won consecutive national championships — there’s significant interest from Connecticut bettors in wagering on the Huskies.

Legislators have through May 8 — the end of the state’s legislative session — to potentially pass the bill.

The legislative effort would not legalize college player prop betting, something the NCAA has worked hard to eliminate across states nationwide this year. Maryland and Ohio are among the states to stop offering college player prop bets in recent months.

Connecticut’s sports betting market is home to three betting apps, with DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics Sportsbook all operating in the state.

Additionally, the legislation includes language related to gambling advertising restrictions. Several of those proposed changes focus on preventing advertising from targeting people under the age of 21, including lottery advertising.
