Monica Shafaq reflects on first 100 days as Gordon Moody CEO

Gordon Moody CEO Monica Shafaq discussed what the first three months have been like in her new role.

On her journey, Shafaq said: “My initial days with Gordon Moody have been a whirlwind of discovery and connection.

“The most humbling experience has been meeting our service users in our treatment centres.

“Their stories, resilience, and determination have fuelled my passion to lead with purpose and compassion.”

Gordon Moody is a charity in the UK that provides help and support for individuals, families, and communities affected by gambling-related harm.

The organisation recently published its Q3 2023/24 data report for gambling figures in the UK, which included statistics on referrals, demographics and results.

Shafaq was appointed as CEO in January, with one of the first major projects seeing Dante or Die release a short film about the impact that gambling addiction has on the lives of people and their loved ones, based on the experiences of individuals who have come to Gordon Moody for support.

She would also attend several meetings with both the National Gambling Support Network (NGSN) partners and GambleAware.

The start of the year was busy though, as she also reflected: “Attended my first ICE London 2024 and felt enthused after having the pleasure of networking with a diverse range of global partners who are all passionate about advocating for safer gambling.

“It was great to catch up with people in person who either have an existing relationship with Gordon Moody or are looking to develop one.

“I was pleased to see the event included time to consider equality, diversity, and inclusion – which is a particular passion of mine – in the tech, gaming, and gambling industry.”

Other highlights from her first one hundred days include being invited to the House of Lords, meeting with advocate Harj Gahley, attending the International Women’s Day conference and the inaugural Female Professional Network lunch.

As for the next one hundred days, Shafaq commented: “There may be challenges ahead but I know that together, we will meet these challenges head on, continue to grow and evolve, and empower those affected by gambling addiction to reclaim and rebuild their lives free from gambling addiction.”
