In January 2024, Scott Sibella entered a guilty plea for allowing an illegal bookmaker, Wayne Nix, to pay a $120,000 gambling debt to the MGM Grand without reporting the transaction to the federal government. This violation of the Bank Secrecy Act is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and potential prison time.

Despite the severity of the charges, Sibella maintained that he had not personally benefited from the incident. In a statement released shortly after the sentencing, he expressed his regret for the pain this matter had caused his friends and family, and his gratitude for those who stood by him during the difficult times.

Numerous individuals, including Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill, wrote to the federal judge presiding over the case, asking for leniency in Sibella’s sentencing. Sheriff McMahill attested to Sibella’s character, stating that the accusations were “out of character” and did not represent the person he had come to know. The sheriff emphasized Sibella’s unwavering support for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department over the years.

Sibella’s attorneys also highlighted his impressive professional track record, noting that in his 30-year career in the gaming industry, he had never been disciplined by the Nevada Gaming Control Board or the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. This spotless record, they argued, was a testament to Sibella’s dedication and commitment to upholding industry standards.

Despite the pleas for leniency, the Nevada Gaming Control Board, which had remained largely silent since the news of the federal investigation broke, filed a complaint against Sibella that could result in the loss of his gaming license. This move suggested that the regulatory body was taking a firm stance on the matter, underscoring the gravity of Sibella’s actions.

The government’s sentencing recommendation noted that Sibella was no longer employed as a casino president, the environment in which the crime had occurred. According to the recommendation, Sibella had been terminated from another large casino in Las Vegas due to the case, and the negative publicity surrounding his felony conviction for violating the Bank Secrecy Act would serve as a deterrent for both him and others from engaging in similar conduct.
