The New York State Senate has passed a bill requiring sports betting and gambling advertisements to include warnings about the potentially harmful and addictive effects of gambling.

Assembly Bill 1118 now heads to the House for further consideration, but New York’s current legislative session ends on Thursday.

The bill, introduced by Assemblyman Clyde Vanel and co-sponsored by Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, passed by a 57-0 vote last Thursday. It seeks to amend racing, pari-mutuel wagering and breeding laws and ensure safe marketing practices.

AB 1118 also would require the New York State Gaming Commission to provide clear advertising guidelines on its website and work with Chinazo Cunningham, the commissioner of addiction services, to ensure that all advertisements feature a problem gambling hotline.

New York Sen. Joseph Addabbo is sponsoring two other gaming bills during this legislative session. S9236 would amend state law so that 1 percent of tax revenue from sports betting must be allocated toward problem gambling treatment, 1 percent to youth sports and education funding and 1 percent to youth team sports funding. In addition, S9044 seeks to raise the age limit for daily fantasy sports to 21 after concerns over a growing number of younger users participating in gambling.
