Arizona Gears Up for Sports Betting License Applications
The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) has announced that the application window for sports betting licenses will be open from July 8th to July 19th, 2024, with a hard deadline of 5 PM on the final day. Prospective applicants, both from Arizona’s sports franchises and tribal entities, are encouraged to thoroughly review the application materials and requirements available on the ADG website. This comprehensive review will ensure that their submissions are complete and aligned with the state’s established criteria, as per the event wagering rules and statutes.
The ADG has specified that it will accept applications for at least one event wagering license reserved for Arizona Tribes, as well as no less than one license for Arizona Sports Franchises. This strategic move aims to strike a balance between the interests of the state’s indigenous communities and its professional sports organizations, creating a level playing field for all stakeholders.
At present, Arizona has a total of 17 active sports betting licenses, with eight tethered to the state’s sports franchises and nine allocated to its tribal entities. The upcoming application window represents an opportunity for the state to potentially reach its maximum allotted 20 licenses.
Arizona’s sports betting industry has set new records with each passing month. In March, the state witnessed a staggering $759 million in wagers across sportsbooks and mobile apps, marking the highest monthly handle in its legalized sports betting history. This impressive figure represents a 17.8% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
The significant growth in Arizona’s sports betting handle can be attributed to several key factors, chief among them being the immense popularity of the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, particularly the highly anticipated March Madness event. Additionally, the state’s proximity to the non-legal California market, as well as its neighboring legal markets in Nevada and Colorado, has further contributed to its appeal among sports betting enthusiasts and operators alike.
Arizona’s sports betting landscape is characterized by a reliance on mobile wagering, with a staggering 99% of the total handle being generated through mobile platforms. This trend has been consistent, with the state exceeding $700 million in mobile handle in three of the last five months.
As the ADG prepares to open the application window, prospective licensees can expect to face intense competition. New operators seeking to enter the Arizona market will be required to pay a $750,000 initial license fee, following a $100,000 application fee, underscoring the significant financial commitment involved.
The current sports betting landscape in Arizona is largely dominated by a few key players. In March, FanDuel and DraftKings held nearly 70% of the $752.4 million mobile handle, showcasing their market dominance. Other significant operators in the state include BetMGM, Caesars, bet365, and ESPN BET, collectively controlling almost 96% of the market.
The ADG will be responsible for evaluating all applications received during the upcoming application window, ensuring that they adhere to the state’s established criteria and comply with the relevant event wagering rules and statutes. This rigorous evaluation process will help maintain the integrity and fairness of Arizona’s sports betting industry, safeguarding the interests of both consumers and operators.
