In June Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) reached MOP17.7 billion (approximately $2.21 billion), reflecting a 12.4% decrease from the previous month’s MOP20.19 billion ($2.51 billion) haul.

The June tally, as reported by the local regulator, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), marked a 16.4% increase from the same period in the previous year. However, when compared to the pre-pandemic figures of June 2019, the revenue saw a more substantial decline of 25.7%, from the MOP23.8 billion ($2.97 billion) reported at that time.

Analysts have attributed the June decline in Macau’s GGR to a combination of factors. Firstly, the month only had the Dragon Boat Festival as a public holiday, which fell on June 10th. This limited the number of high-spending visitors during the month. Additionally, the ongoing Euro 2024 football matches and seasonal fluctuations in tourism patterns are believed to have contributed to the revenue drop.

For the first half of 2024, Macau’s casino GGR reached MOP113.8 billion ($14.20 billion), representing a 41.9% increase from the same period last year. However, this figure still remains 23.9% lower than the MOP149.50 billion ($18.66 billion) recorded in the first half of 2019, before the pandemic’s impact.

Macau’s gaming industry has long been dominated by the traditional casino model, but the region is now undergoing a significant transformation. Diversification efforts, including the development of non-gaming attractions and the promotion of broader tourism, are aimed at reducing the industry’s reliance on gambling revenue.
