DraftKings Unveils Plans to Enter DC’s Sports Betting Market

DraftKings, the sports betting platform, has announced its intention to venture into the recently opened competitive sports betting market in Washington, DC.

Matt Kalish, the North American president of DraftKings, expressed his gratitude to the DC Council for paving the way for this expansion. “We extend our sincere thanks to the DC Council for creating an opportunity to bring DraftKings’ acclaimed sportsbook to the nation’s capital,” Kalish stated. “Together with our esteemed partner, DC United, we eagerly anticipate delivering an unparalleled experience to fans through our customer-friendly product.”

To gain a foothold in the DC market, DraftKings has forged a strategic partnership with DC United, the prominent Major League Soccer franchise.

DraftKings will join sports betting operators already active in the District, including FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars Sportsbook.

The path to establishing a competitive sports betting landscape in Washington, DC, has been paved with challenges. Initially, the market was a monopoly controlled by Intralot, the DC Lottery’s provider, through its GamBet DC platform. However, GamBet faced significant criticism for its poor usability and lackluster financial performance, prompting a call for change.

In March, Intralot announced its decision to scrap GamBet and appoint FanDuel as the new subcontractor. This transition yielded immediate results, with FanDuel reporting a staggering 450% increase in handle compared to GamBet’s performance in May 2023. FanDuel’s revenue soared to $4.9 million, a stark contrast to GamBet’s modest $711,282 during the same period.

Despite FanDuel’s initial success as the sole operator, the company decided to terminate its contract on July 15th and join the newly established competitive market. This decision followed the DC Council’s groundbreaking move to open the sports betting marketplace, effectively ending Intralot’s monopoly. Under the new framework, the number of operators is not capped.

Prior to the market’s expansion, FanDuel operated under a 40% tax rate as the sole operator. However, with the introduction of multiple platforms, the tax rate has been reduced to a more favorable 20% for all operators, including DraftKings.

To gain a foothold in the DC market, several sports betting operators have forged strategic partnerships with prominent local sports franchises. BetMGM has aligned itself with the Washington Nationals (MLB), while Caesars has teamed up with the Capitals (NHL), Wizards (NBA), and Mystics (WNBA).
