Nebraska Online Sports Betting Legalization Effort Takes Step Forward

An effort to legalize online sports betting in Nebraska made progress Monday, with LR3CA moving out of the state legislature’s General Affairs Committee.

Legislative Resolution 3CA (LR3CA) could bring sports betting apps to Nebraska, if it’s approved by both the legislature and voters. The resolution still needs support on the floor of the legislature, which is far from guaranteed.

If that passes, the question of allowing online sports betting will appear in front of voters either this year or a later year. The timing is still to be determined.

The resolution’s accompanying bill stalled in committee, however, meaning approval of the resolution would still require the legislature to craft implementation details for online sports betting. Depending on when voter approval occurs, it could take multiple years before betting apps would go live in the state, even if the resolution moves forward.

“It keeps power in the hands of the Legislature, allows voters to speak on it, and then lets the Legislature decide once it’s legal how proscriptive you want to make it, as well as what you want to do with the money,” Sen. John Cavanaugh told the Lincoln Journal Star.

While the resolution moving out of committee signals progress for Nebraska online sports betting legalization, the state’s bettors shouldn’t count on receiving access to betting apps in the immediate future quite yet. Nebraska permits retail sports betting.
