The Dutch government’s plan to raise the gambling tax from 30.5% to 37.8% has placed Holland Casino in a dangerous place according to Petra de Ruiter, the director of Holland Casino. This increase would be “disastrous” for the company’s operations says the Holland Casino boss. The casino has already suffered a loss of 3.5 million euros in the first half of 2024, a stark contrast to the 17 million euro profit it recorded in the same period the previous year.

“It is crucial for our financial health that no further significant cost increases occur now,” Ruud Bergervoet  the CFO of Holland Casino said as the company announced the H1 loss, “Only then can we prevent ourselves from ending up in a loss-making situation.”

The higher personnel costs and the 1% tax increase implemented at the start of 2024 have already taken a significant toll on Holland Casino’s bottom line, costing the company an additional 3.7 million euros. With the proposed tax hike looming, the casino finds itself in a precarious position, forced to consider unpalatable options to stay in the black.

To offset the impact of the tax increase, Holland Casino may have to resort to “aggressive campaigns to recruit new guests or encouraging guests to spend much more,” as warned by Petra de Ruiter. This approach, however, goes against the government’s policy to reduce gambling addiction and money problems, potentially creating a conflict of interest.

Another measure the casino is considering is significantly lowering the prize money offered to its patrons. This move, while potentially necessary for the casino’s survival, could further alienate its customer base and undermine the overall gaming experience.

The planned investments in Holland Casino’s prevention policy, aimed at addressing gambling addiction and related issues, are also under threat due to the financial pressures the organization is facing. This is a concerning development, as responsible gambling initiatives are crucial for maintaining the industry’s integrity and public trust the company says.
