In July 2024, the commercial casinos in Kansas experienced a notable recovery, with revenues increasing by 2.7 percent  compared to the previous month. This positive turn comes after a challenging June, when the state’s four casinos reported a significant revenue decline of 8.9%. According to data released by the Kansas Lottery, the total revenue generated by these casinos reached $33.8 million in July, showcasing a rebound that highlights the sector’s potential for growth amidst an ever-evolving gaming landscape.

Positive outlook amid inconsistency

July’s revenue growth marks the fourth time this year that Kansas casinos have witnessed a month-on-month increase. Despite the recent upswing, there remains an overarching trend of volatility in the gaming sector. Since July 2023, Kansas casinos have experienced fluctuations in their monthly revenues, with increases recorded in seven months and declines in six. This inconsistency raises questions about the long-term stability of casino earnings in the state.

Pittsburg’s Kansas Crossing Casino led the pack in July, reporting a remarkable 9.2% increase in revenue, growing from $3 million in June to approximately $3.3 million. Other notable performers included the Hollywood Casino and Kansas Star Casino, which recorded revenue increases of 2.41 percent and 1.04 percent, respectively. The Boot Hill Casino also contributed positively, achieving a revenue increase of 4.55 percent. Collectively, these gains signal a robust recovery phase for Kansas’s commercial gaming establishments, as operators work to enhance their offerings and attract more visitors.

Impact of online gambling legislation

While the July revenue figures reflect a solid month for Kansas casinos, a significant opportunity remains untapped: the legalization of online casinos. Currently, Kansas has not yet embraced iGaming, despite the fact that online sports betting has been legalized and operational. This missed opportunity could be costing the state millions in potential revenue. Projections from PlayUSA indicate that Kansas could generate more than $40 million monthly through online casinos, mirroring trends observed in other states with legalized iGaming.

To illustrate the potential, one can look at the performance of other states with established online casino markets. In July, Pennsylvania generated approximately $215.3 million, while Michigan and New Jersey reported revenues of $195.4 million and $191.4 million, respectively. These figures highlight the substantial financial benefits that online gambling could bring to states like Kansas, particularly given its population of around 2.9 million.

As lawmakers consider the future of gaming in Kansas, the success of neighbouring states serves as a compelling argument for the legalization of online casinos. Not only could it bolster the state’s overall gaming revenue, but it could also enhance consumer choices, leading to a more competitive and appealing gaming environment.

Yearly trends and future expectations

Despite the positive numbers in July, Kansas casinos are not immune to year-over-year comparisons. According to the Kansas Lottery’s Fiscal Year to Date analysis, overall casino revenue for the fiscal year is down by 1.2 percent, primarily due to a decrease in wins at the Kansas Star Casino. This trend underscores the need for ongoing innovation and marketing strategies to ensure sustained growth in an increasingly competitive market.

Kansas’s gaming revenue over the past year has displayed a “yo-yo” pattern, as operators adapt to consumer preferences and external market factors. The ability to maintain consistent growth remains a challenge, but recent trends indicate that with the right strategic approach, Kansas casinos could solidify their market position.

As the state continues to navigate the complexities of gaming regulations and market dynamics, the July revenue increase offers a glimmer of hope for the future. Stakeholders must focus on capitalizing on emerging opportunities, particularly in the realm of online gaming, to ensure long-term sustainability and growth in the Kansas casino market. The combination of increased tourism, evolving gaming options, and potential legislative changes could set the stage for a vibrant and lucrative future for Kansas’s gaming industry.
