

Michigan’s Sports Betting Handle Soars 27% In August
The Michigan Gaming Control Board unveiled that the state’s sports betting handle for August 2024 had surged by 26.8% compared to the same period the previous year, helped with the early start to the college football season and the fervour surrounding the reigning national champion University of Michigan.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board’s recent report on the state’s sports betting landscape, in the final month of summer, $289.7 million was wagered, marking a 26.8% increase from August 2023. This surge in betting activity translated into a 23.7% rise in commercial and tribal sports betting revenue, which reached $29.1 million.
Michigan’s sports betting operators have maintained a consistent grip on the market, with the August figures showcasing their resilience. The combined online and retail operators enjoyed a 10% hold, a slight dip from the previous year but still firmly within the double-digit win rate range. This marks the fifth consecutive month that the state has witnessed a double-digit win rate.
The sports betting landscape in Michigan is a harmonious blend of retail and online operations, each playing a vital role in the state’s overall success. In August, the retail sportsbooks bounced back from the previous month’s revenue loss, turning a $1.7 million profit. The three brick-and-mortar casino operators collectively generated a handle of $9.6 million, a significant jump from July’s $6.6 million and the highest since May’s $11.1 million.
On the digital front, online sports betting continued to dominate the market, accounting for $280.1 million of the total handle in August – a 28.2% increase year-over-year. Michigan’s 15 mobile operators combined to produce $27.4 million in revenue, a slight dip from the $29.4 million generated in July.
FanDuel surpassed the $100 million mark in the amount wagered for the sixth time this year, the first occurrence since May. While the $11.1 million in gross gaming revenue represented the lowest of 2024, the operator’s hold rate of 11%.
DraftKings maintained its strong performance in Michigan, the operator posted the second-best handle at $78.1 million, a $8.4 million increase from the previous month. Although its revenue dipped slightly to $7.6 million.
BetMGM, the online sportsbook, emerged as a big winner in August, with its 11.3% hold generating $4.6 million in profits on a $41.2 million handle. The operator surpassed the $40 million mark in wagers for the eighth time this year and secured its second consecutive month of clearing $4 million in profits.
While the top three operators commanded significant attention, other notable players in the Michigan market also made their mark. Caesars, with a handle of $18.4 million, fell short of the million-dollar revenue mark due to a sub-5% hold. Fanatics Sportsbook and ESPN BET, however, both cleared the million-dollar profit threshold.
The sports betting boom in Michigan has been accompanied by a parallel surge in the state’s iGaming sector. In August, online casinos generated $196.7 million in revenue, a 29.2% increase year-over-year and the third-largest iGaming total in Michigan’s history. This represented a 2.7% rise from July.
The Wolverine State’s iGaming success translated into substantial tax revenue, with the state collecting $36.9 million and the city of Detroit pocketing $9.1 million. Tribal operators also benefited, making $4.6 million in payments to governing bodies.
BetMGM once again demonstrated its dominance in the iGaming arena, accounting for $52.5 million in revenue. This contributed to Michigan’s year-to-date online casino revenue, which surpassed the $6 billion mark following August’s haul.
