The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection reported that sports betting total handle growing by an impressive 41.4% year-over-year in August 2024.

The latest data from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection reveals that the state’s total sports betting handle reached an impressive $129.2 million in August 2024, marking a 6% increase from the previous month. This robust performance has been underpinned by the continued popularity of online sports betting, which accounted for $123.24 million, or 95.4%, of the total handle.

The online sports betting segment in Connecticut has been dominated by the industry’s heavyweights, with DraftKings and FanDuel collectively accounting for a remarkable 86.2% of the total online handle. These two operators have not only captured the lion’s share of the market but have also demonstrated their prowess in generating substantial revenue, combining for $11.01 million, or 86.2%, of the total online revenue tally.

Fanatics, the relative newcomer in the Connecticut sports betting landscape, has also made its mark, posting its second consecutive month of a 10-plus percent win rate and generating $1.76 million in revenue from its $16.97 million handle.

While the online sports betting segment has been the primary driver of the overall market growth, the retail sports betting segment in Connecticut has also seen a noteworthy surge in activity. In August 2024, the state’s retail sportsbooks enjoyed a 15.49% hold, generating $915,200 in revenue on $5.91 million in total wagers.

The Connecticut Lottery, which operates the majority of the state’s retail sportsbooks, has accounted for $5.72 million in bets and $884,900 in revenue. The XL Center location, on the other hand, managed to capture a relatively smaller share of the retail market, with $188,700 in wagers and $30,300 in revenue.

The Connecticut sports betting market has been the consistent double-digit hold for the state’s sportsbooks.

The August 2024 figures reported the state’s sports betting operators generating a 10.6% hold, translating to $13.66 million in revenue from the $129.2 million handle. This has directly benefited the state’s coffers, with the government receiving $1.58 million in tax contributions.

The Connecticut sports betting market has not only experienced a strong performance in August 2024 but has also demonstrated remarkable growth on a year-to-date basis. The state has recorded a 30.7% increase in total bets compared to the same period in the previous year, with the handle reaching $1.27 billion through the first eight months of 2024.

Operators have also seen a significant boost in their year-to-date revenue, with a 32% improvement compared to the same timeframe in 2023. This growth has been achieved despite a 13.86% month-over-month decline in August, which was primarily attributed to the industry’s ability to generate a 13% hold in the preceding month.

Fanatics. The online sports betting platform has made a strong impression in the state, posting its second consecutive month of a 10-plus percent win rate and generating $1.76 million in revenue from its $16.97 million handle.

This performance highlights Fanatics’ ability to carve out a niche for itself in the highly competitive Connecticut market, challenging the dominance of industry giants like DraftKings and FanDuel. As the state’s sports betting landscape continues to evolve, the presence of Fanatics and other emerging operators may further intensify the competitive dynamics.

DraftKings and FanDuel, are the two operators engaged in a close battle for market share, with DraftKings narrowly edging out FanDuel in terms of handle, $53.28 million to $52.99 million, respectively.

However, FanDuel emerged victorious in the revenue column, thanks to its impressive 11.67% hold, which allowed it to generate $6.19 million in revenue. DraftKings, on the other hand, managed to secure $4.82 million in revenue, a testament to the fierce competition between these two industry giants.

This trend has been consistent throughout the year, with both operators recording $2.089 billion handles year-to-date. However, FanDuel has managed to outpace DraftKings in the revenue column, generating $227.51 million compared to DraftKings’ $183.8 million.
