Macau’s October GGR Hits $2.6 Billion: A Four-Year High
Macau gaming reported gross gaming revenue (GGR) reached approximately MOP 20.79 billion for October ($2.6 billion), that is a year-over-year increase of 6.6% and a 20.5% rise compared to the previous month. October 2024 is now the best month for Macau’s GGR since January 2020.
The October Golden Week, a seven-day holiday period in mainland China, significantly contributed to the surge in Macau’s GGR. This event, which ran from October 1 to October 7, draws millions of tourists to the region, providing a substantial boost to local businesses, especially in the gaming sector.
The Golden Week not only boosts gaming revenue but also plays a crucial role in Macau’s broader economic health. The influx of tourists translates into higher spending across various sectors, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy, which has been recovering from the pandemic’s adverse effects.
The reported GGR of $2.6 billion for October 2024 marks a significant improvement compared to the same month last year. Analysts attribute this growth to several factors, including the easing of travel restrictions and the gradual return of consumer confidence in the gaming sector.
The sequential increase of 20.5% from September 2024 further underscores the momentum in the gaming industry. This growth trend suggests that the market is not only recovering but also growing, as operators adapt to changing consumer behaviours and preferences.
Looking at the broader picture, the first ten months of 2024 have shown a cumulative GGR of MOP 190.14 billion, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 28.1%.
Investment analysts from China International Capital Corporation (CICC) have projected a sequential increase of 4% in GGR for the fourth quarter of 2024.
