Lui Che Woo, a Macau legend and Chairman of Galaxy Entertainment has passed away at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped the landscape of Macau’s casino sector. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit and significant contributions to the gaming world, Lui’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Asia’s wealthiest individuals is a story of resilience, innovation, and vision

Born in Jiangmen, Guangdong province, in 1929, Lui’s early life was marked by hardship. His family relocated to Hong Kong in 1934, where they faced the challenges of the Japanese occupation during World War II. Despite these adversities, Lui’s determination shone through as he began working at a young age, selling food alongside his grandmother. This formative experience instilled in him a strong work ethic and a desire to succeed.

In the decades that followed, Lui ventured into various industries, including real estate and construction. His entrepreneurial journey culminated in the founding of Galaxy Entertainment Group, which would go on to become a powerhouse in the gaming industry. The opening of Galaxy Macau in 2011 marked a significant milestone for the company and the region, establishing Lui as a key player in the transformation of Macau into a global gaming hub.

Outstanding Contribution Award

In 2014 Lui Che Woo travelled to London for the International Gaming Awards (IGA) to receive the highest accolade the Outstanding Contribution Award for his services not just to gaming but for charity work.

Colin Thompson the co-founder of the IGA said, “the man was a true gentlemen, he is one of the legends of Macau and one of the most influential, however he was so humble, kind and polite, it was an honour to meet him and present him with the outstanding contribution award.”

Lui Che Woo’s upbringing played a crucial role in shaping his character and ambitions. Growing up in a modest household, he learned the value of hard work and perseverance from an early age. His family’s struggles during the war years left a lasting impression on him, motivating him to seek opportunities that would lead to a better life.

In 1934, the Lui family moved to Hong Kong, where they faced the harsh realities of life under Japanese occupation. This tumultuous period forced Lui to leave school and enter the workforce at a young age. Selling food on the streets, he developed a deep understanding of the value of money and the importance of customer service.

Early Career Ventures

After the war, Lui seized the opportunity presented by Hong Kong’s booming economy. He entered the construction industry, capitalizing on the demand for housing and commercial spaces. His early ventures laid the groundwork for his future success in the gaming sector.

The Birth of Galaxy Entertainment

Lui Che Woo’s foray into the gaming industry began in earnest with the establishment of Galaxy Entertainment Group. His vision was to create a unique gaming experience that catered to the preferences of Asian consumers, distinguishing his brand from Western competitors.

Under Lui’s leadership, Galaxy Entertainment focused on integrating Asian cultural elements into its properties. This approach resonated with the growing number of mainland Chinese tourists visiting Macau, solidifying the company’s position in the market.

The Launch of Galaxy Macau

In 2011, the grand opening of Galaxy Macau marked a turning point for both the company and the region. The resort featured a blend of luxury accommodations, entertainment options, and gaming facilities, setting a new standard for integrated resorts in Asia. The success of Galaxy Macau was a testament to Lui’s foresight and understanding of consumer preferences.

Beyond his business acumen, Lui Che Woo was known for his philanthropic efforts. He believed in giving back to the community and supporting various charitable initiatives.

The Lui Che Woo Prize

In 2015, Lui established the Lui Che Woo Prize, which recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to society. The prize reflects his commitment to promoting peace, sustainability, and the advancement of humanity.
