A Sky News investigation has uncovered that certain online casinos are allowing people to sign up with their Roblox account details and use the video game’s virtual currency to play games. Users just need to tick a box saying they’re at least 18 or provide a date of birth without needing to supply any proof of their age.

About 80 million people play Roblox every day, with approximately 42% or 17.6 million of them being no older than 12. One US teenager gambled away about £150,000 ($190,471) worth of Robux after joining a gambling site for the first time at just 14, with the minimum age requirement usually set at 21.

The Sky News team focused on three major Robux casinos — RBLXWild, Bloxmoon, and BloxFlip. The resulting findings led the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) to begin its own probe into the matter and block people in the region from accessing these platforms.

Talking about the problem, UKGC Chief Executive Andrew Rhodes said: “Criminals will always try and find new ways to exploit people, including children.”

Legal action in the US is continuing against Roblox, with parents alleging the game’s creator knew of the link to gambling sites and that it was profiting by taking a 30% conversion fee when exchanging Robux for US dollars.
