Iowa’s December Betting Handle Drops to £293 Million

The Iowa Gaming and Racing Commission recently unveiled the state’s December wagering figures, revealing a total handle of £293.1 million. This represents a 7% decrease from the previous month’s tally. However, it’s worth noting that this figure still surpasses the December 2022 handle by 3.6%, indicating a year-on-year growth despite the month-on-month decline.

December dip isn’t entirely unexpected, a look at historical data shows that the final month of the year has consistently seen a reduction in betting activity compared to November over the past three years.

Several factors contributed to the December downturn in Iowa’s sports betting handle. One significant element was the reduced number of high-profile sporting events during the month. With the college football regular season winding down and the NFL entering its final stretch, bettors had fewer marquee matchups to wager on.

Additionally, the holiday season typically sees a shift in consumer spending patterns. Many individuals allocate their discretionary income towards gifts and travel, potentially leaving less for sports betting activities. This seasonal trend, combined with the natural lull in certain sports calendars, creates a perfect storm for a December dip.

Moreover, increased competition from neighbouring states with legal sports betting markets may have siphoned off some of Iowa’s potential handle. As more states embrace sports wagering, cross-border betting becomes an increasingly relevant factor in market performance.

The Impact on Sportsbook Revenue

The December decline in handle had a pronounced effect on sportsbook revenue. After paying out winners, Iowa’s online and retail sportsbooks collectively netted £13.2 million in receipts. This figure represents a significant drop from November’s impressive £30 million haul.

The stark contrast in revenue between November and December can be attributed to a combination of factors:

  1. Reduced betting volume
  2. More favourable outcomes for bettors
  3. Promotional offers and bonuses cutting into operator margins

Perhaps most telling is the shift in hold percentage – the amount retained by sportsbooks from the total handle. December saw this metric plummet to 4.5%, less than half of November’s 9.5% hold. This dramatic reduction underscores the challenges faced by operators during the month.

Retail Sportsbooks Face Uphill Battle

While the overall sports betting landscape in Iowa experienced turbulence, physical sportsbooks bore the brunt of the December decline. Brick-and-mortar locations saw their handle shrink from £24.4 million in December 2022 to £20 million in December 2023, marking a substantial year-on-year decrease.

The situation for retail sportsbooks was further exacerbated by negative net revenue. These physical betting venues collectively lost £545,000 in December, a stark illustration of the challenges facing traditional betting establishments in an increasingly digital world.

Of the 16 casinos in Iowa offering sports betting services, only half managed to generate positive net receipts after paying out winning tickets. Even more concerning, just two locations surpassed the £50,000 mark in net receipts, highlighting the difficult operating environment for retail sportsbooks.

While the overall trend was downward, some operators managed to buck the trend and post positive results.

BetMGM and bet365, for instance, both saw increases in their betting handle. This growth, while not sufficient to alter their rankings in terms of market share, demonstrates the potential for individual operators to outperform the broader market.

On the revenue front, BetRivers and Circa Sports managed to boost their bottom lines, showcasing effective strategies in a challenging month. However, these success stories were the exception rather than the rule.
