Renowned for its rich culture, historical sites and centuries-old traditions, Spain is now emerging as a powerful force in the global gaming industry. As the largest country in Southern Europe, Spain’s evolution in the gaming industry is attracting international attention, highlighted by recent data and trends.

Highlights of the third quarter report for 2024

According to the report, Spain’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) reached €348.09 million, up 0.49% from the previous quarter and 14.41% year-on-year. Player deposits increased by 4.62% from the previous quarter and 23.87% year-on-year. In addition, the average number of active gaming accounts increased by 3.02% from the previous quarter and 33.33% from last year, reaching 1,443,615 accounts.

The Spanish gaming market covers a number of segments, including betting, bingo, casino, race and poker, which all contributed to GGR. The report highlights that casinos dominate the market growth, accounting for 54.01% of GGR, or €187.99 million, followed by the betting segment, which accounts for 39.05%, or €135.92 million.

Despite its smaller share of the market, bingo showed solid growth, up 1.71% quarter-on-quarter and 0.67% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the poker space faced challenges, with tournament participation down 28.99% from the previous quarter. However, cash poker rebounded, with participation up 15.42% quarter-on-quarter.

As the Spanish gaming landscape continues to evolve, it is clear that some segments are facing difficulties, but others are performing strongly. The upward trends in revenue and player participation show that the market is dynamic and has potential for growth and innovation.

Spain’s future in the world of gambling

According to a report by Statista, the Spanish online gambling market is expected to achieve revenues of $2.13 billion (about €1.96 billion) in 2025, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.19% from 2025 to 2029. By 2029, the market size is expected to reach $2.51 billion (about €2 billion) and the user base will grow to 4 million.

The online sports betting market is expected to generate revenues of approximately $1.01 billion (€98.2 million) by 2025. Although the United States is expected to dominate the global online betting market, Spain’s steady growth highlights its potential in this area.

While the country’s gaming industry has a promising outlook, challenges such as declining poker participation and changing player preferences require strategic intervention. On the positive side, growth in active accounts, increased market investment, and strong casino growth offer more opportunities for operators and stakeholders.

The Spanish gaming landscape is more than just numbers; it represents a growing ecosystem ready to integrate innovation, responsible gaming practices and global competitiveness. However, the question remains: is Spain ready to fully tap into the gaming future?
