The American Gaming Association (AGA) has released its forecast for legal wagering on Super Bowl LIX, projecting a $1.39 billion to be bet through authorised channels. The figure represents a significant leap forward in the ever-expanding landscape of sports betting in the United States. As the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles prepare to face off in New Orleans, the financial implications of this sporting spectacle are set to reach unprecedented heights.

The AGA’s projection marks an 11.2% increase from the previous year’s estimate, reflecting the continued growth and widespread acceptance of legal sports betting across the nation. This rise in wagering activity not only underscores the immense popularity of the Super Bowl as a betting event but also highlights the increasing prevalence of regulated sportsbooks in America.

The Rise of Legal Sports Betting

The landscape of sports betting in the United States has undergone a seismic shift since the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018. This ruling paved the way for individual states to legalise and regulate sports betting within their borders, leading to a rapid expansion of the industry.

In the years following the PASPA repeal, numerous states have embraced legal sports betting, recognising its potential as a source of tax revenue and economic stimulus. As of 2025, the majority of US states have legalised some form of sports wagering, with many offering both retail and online options.

Mobile betting apps and online platforms has made it easier than ever for punters to place wagers from the comfort of their homes or on the go. This convenience factor has played a significant role in driving the growth of legal sports betting, particularly among younger demographics.

Shifting Public Perception

As legal sports betting has become more mainstream, public attitudes towards gambling have evolved. What was once viewed as a taboo activity is now increasingly seen as a legitimate form of entertainment and engagement with sports.

The AGA’s projection is based says the AGA on a comprehensive analysis of historical revenue data from legal sports betting jurisdictions across the United States. By examining trends in betting activity, particularly during major sporting events, the association has developed a model to forecast future wagering volumes.

The projected $1.39 billion handle for Super Bowl LIX represents an 11.2% increase from the previous year’s estimate of $1.25 billion.
