In recent years, Vietnam’s online gambling market has experienced significant development and has become one of the areas of high interest in Southeast Asia.

This growth is mainly due to the young and tech-savvy population structure, high smartphone penetration rate and the rise of the e-sports industry. According to the latest report of IMARC Group, the Vietnamese gaming market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9.60% from 2024 to 2032.

Market size and growth

According to Statista, the total revenue of Vietnam's online casino games market is expected to reach US$15.38 million in 2022. Although this number is relatively small, the market shows a trend of continuous growth as the Internet and mobile devices become more popular.

Regulation and Supervision

The Vietnamese government has relatively strict regulation of the gaming industry. In November 2024, Vietnam promulgated Decree 147 to implement stricter regulatory measures on the online gaming industry, aimed at protecting minors and reducing the negative social impact that certain types of games may have. As of mid-November 2024, the government has issued a total of 288 G1 gaming licenses, of which 184 are still valid. In addition, 192 certifications have been issued for G2, G3 and G4 games, covering more than 16,000 game titles.

However, the legal framework for online gambling is still under development. As of 2024, Vietnam has not yet fully legalized online gambling. According to iGamingToday, despite discussions, no specific online gambling regulation measures have been introduced.

Market Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the huge market potential, operators face multiple challenges when entering the Vietnamese market, including strict laws and regulations, cultural differences, and limitations in the payment system. However, these challenges also come with opportunities. For example, with the rise of e-sports and mobile games, operators can attract Vietnamese players by providing localized game content and payment solutions.

Future Outlook

With the continuous advancement of technology and changes in user needs, Vietnam's online gaming market is expected to continue to grow. Operators need to pay close attention to regulatory changes to ensure compliance while occupying market share through innovative gaming products and high-quality user experience. In addition, strengthening cooperation with local partners and gaining a deep understanding of local market needs will help to succeed in a highly competitive market.

In summary, Vietnam's online gambling market is in a stage of rapid development. Despite the challenges of regulation and market entry, its future development prospects are still worth looking forward to due to its huge potential user base and growing Internet penetration rate.
