网站The Register日前报道指Google的Chromium开发者，已经秘密开发和测试新的iOS浏览器，一旦Apple撤销现在有关浏览器必须使用WebKit引擎的限制，Google就可以抢占先机推出。报道指开发中的浏览器将会使用Google的Blink引擎，但现在还无法通过Apple的App Store审查和上架。
现在Apple要求所有iOS和iPadOS的浏览器，必须使用他们的WebKit浏览器引擎，因此就算Windows和macOS版本的Google Chrome和Microsoft Edge均采用Chromium，他们的iOS和iPadOS版本都需要被逼改用WebKit，结果性能表现都与Apple的Safari相当。
近年欧盟对于反市场竞争行为的监管越来越严格，他们的数码市场法可能会逼使Apple，最快在2024年容许第三方App Store在iPhone和iPad出现，同时撤销有关浏览器引擎的限制。现在Google筹备使用自家Blink引擎的浏览器，目标就是要在限制放宽后能尽快推出新浏览器产品。
