Alphabet 旗下的 Google 週四宣布，由於加拿大一項要求科技公司為新聞付費的法律生效，因此將在其推送的新聞中移除加拿大的新聞。
加拿大日前通過「線上新聞法」（Online News Act）法案，並成為正式法律。根據「線上新聞法」要求，Google、Facebook、Instagram 等平台必須付費使用媒體的新聞內容，做法類似澳洲在 2021 年推出的「新聞媒體與數位平台強制議價法」（News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code）。
Google 在週四於官方部落格中指出，已經通知加拿大政府，Google 將從搜尋、新聞、探索等產品中刪除加拿大新聞的連結，並且將停止營運加拿大的 Google News Showcase。Google 表示，這項法律使其面對無上限的財務責任，並重申這是支持加拿大新聞業的錯誤方法。
另一家面臨該法律的 Meta 才在上週宣布將從 Facebook、Instagram 上刪除加拿大新聞。
