The Impact of Brexit and COVID-19 on the UK Gambling Industry

The United Kingdom has found itself in a whirlwind of economic turbulence in recent years, grappling with the simultaneous challenges of Brexit and the remains of the COVID-19 pandemic. These two forces have collided, wreaking havoc on the UK gambling and gaming sectors. With a shrinking workforce adding to the struggles faced by smaller establishments, these industries have undergone a dramatic transformation. In this article, we will delve into the profound impact of Brexit and COVID-19 on the UK gambling and gaming sectors, as well as explore the potential solutions proposed by industry leaders.

Brexit’s Effect on Workforce and Growth:

Brexit, the UK’s departure from the European Union, has caused a significant reduction in non-UK workers across various sectors, including gambling and gaming. Skilled individuals from other countries were compelled to abandon their jobs in the UK due to the uncertainty surrounding their immigration status, leaving a gaping hole in the workforce.

According to John White, the esteemed CEO of Bacta (British Amusement Catering Trade Association), the UK has become less alluring to non-UK workers. To confront this issue head-on, White proposes the inclusion of the gaming and hospitality sectors in the “shortage occupations list.” Such a move would provide specific salary levels and reduced costs for work visa applications, thereby making the UK a more enticing destination for skilled workers.

Moreover, Brexit has also impeded the growth potential of the UK gambling sector. The gambling white paper, which outlines provisions for the distribution of gaming machines, has been put on hold due to the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. Consequently, growth in the sector has significantly slowed down.

COVID-19’s Impact on Workforce and Sector Resilience:

The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the challenges faced by the UK gambling and gaming sectors. The closure of venues and restrictions on social gatherings have dealt a severe blow to the workforce. A study conducted by Bacta reveals that while existing workers may find it easier to secure new jobs, there remains a pressing need to find more qualified employees to fill the void left by those who have moved on.

Smaller venues, such as bingo parlors and gaming arcades, have been particularly ravaged by the pandemic. These establishments have witnessed a sharp decline in revenue and footfall, compelling them to make significant adjustments. Consequently, there may be a 10% reduction in Category C options and a 20% drop in Category D options, impacting the variety of gaming experiences available to customers.

The Resilience of the Sector and Proposed Solutions:

Despite the immense challenges, the UK gambling and gaming sectors have exhibited remarkable resilience in adapting to the evolving landscape. Average regular pay for employees has witnessed an impressive 7.2% increase between February and April, indicating a degree of stability in these sectors.

To surmount the limitations posed by workforce and growth issues, industry leaders like John White advocate for the relaxation of visa rules and restrictions. This would not only attract skilled workers but also provide the necessary support for the recovery and growth of the gambling and gaming sectors.

However, low-stake gaming operators face a unique challenge. Due to the nature of their offerings, they are unable to pass on increased costs to users. This places additional pressure on these operators to find alternative ways to navigate the changing economic landscape.
