The NCAA has introduced an e-learning module to protect student-athletes from the dangers of sports betting. This initiative aims to educate athletes about gambling risks and help them make informed decisions to maintain the integrity of collegiate sports.

The NCAA has developed model legislative provisions and is urging states to adopt them to improve sports betting laws. Since the repeal of PASPA in 2018, 38 states have legalized sports betting. The NCAA is working with lawmakers to protect student-athletes.

The free e-learning module provides information, scenarios, Q&As, and resources to educate student-athletes about sports betting risks. It covers topics like problem gambling, sporting integrity, NCAA rules, and social media harassment. The module aims to educate current and prospective student-athletes, parents, coaches, and administrators.

The NCAA collaborated with current and former college athletes and campus leaders to develop the module. NFL player Zaire Franklin, a former Syracuse football student-athlete, contributed by delivering sessions.

The NCAA not only focuses on education but also advocates for increased penalties for bettors who harass student-athletes. They push for mandatory education for operators to address harassment and identify it. The NCAA also calls for mandatory reporting hotlines for gambling authorities to report harassment or coercive behavior to law enforcement.

The module emphasizes the need to identify prohibited bettors and prevent those under 21 from participating in sports betting. Betting advertisements should include hotline information, problem gambling warnings, and prohibitions on harassment.

NCAA President Charlie Baker highlights the module as part of their plan to combat problem gambling on college campuses. They aim to protect student-athletes and uphold competition integrity. By educating student-athletes about sports betting risks, the NCAA hopes to mitigate negative impacts.

The NCAA Division I Council will re-evaluate guidelines for reinstating student-athletes involved in sports betting to maintain fair play and prevent compromised outcomes.

In addition to education and guidelines, the NCAA recommends states adopt their model legislative provisions to improve sports betting laws. These provisions aim to protect student-athletes and promote competition integrity.

The launch of the e-learning module is a significant step in the NCAA’s commitment to provide continuous education and resources for student-athletes. It equips them with knowledge to navigate sports betting risks and creates a safe environment for their success.

As sports betting becomes more popular, prioritizing student-athletes’ well-being is crucial. The NCAA’s module is an essential resource that empowers student-athletes and preserves collegiate sports’ integrity. Through collaboration with lawmakers, ongoing education, and stricter regulations, the NCAA is making progress in creating a safer environment for student-athletes in sports betting.
