GAMSTOP Empowers Students with Responsible Gambling Knowledge

The second annual tour of GAMSTOP, the UK’s online gambling self-exclusion program, was successfully completed during university freshmen’ weeks, highlighting the significance of self-exclusion among young adults.

The GAMSTOP team, in collaboration with Ygam and Gamcare Yorkshire and Humber, visited a number of universities in the North of England. They spoke with about 600 kids throughout these trips, having over 140 in-depth discussions on their gambling behaviors. These talks addressed issues including identifying problem gambling, getting help, and talking to friends and family about gambling-related issues.

Increased Sign-Ups Among Young Adults

According to recent data, the number of 16–24-year-olds who signed up for GAMSTOP increased by 30% over the first half of the year. The importance of self-exclusion services for young adults and college students is shown by this increase. During the university roadshows, students learned about the tools for help and got to know the individuals behind GAMSTOP.

GAMSTOP and Ygam released a research earlier this year that examined the prevalence of gambling among college students. According to the results, over 70% of students had gambled in the previous academic year, and 43% had occasionally wagered more than they could afford to lose. Unbelievably, more over half of the students acknowledged funding their gaming via payday loans or overdraft accounts.

“We’ve seen a fantastic response to this collaborative university roadshow for the second year running,” said Fiona Palmer, CEO of GAMSTOP, expressing her delight with the roadshow’s performance. She underlined how crucial it is to spread knowledge of responsible gaming and give kids access to important resources and information.

In the upcoming year, GAMSTOP intends to carry up its work by visiting other college campuses in cooperation with the charitable organizations Ygam and GamCare. By encouraging students to seek treatment when necessary and promoting responsible gaming behaviors, they hope to protect young adults from the possible negative effects of gambling.
