Seven Commissioners Appointed to UK Gambling Commission

The UK Gambling Commission has recently chosen seven new commissioners, a decision that has caused a stir in the industry because none of them have experience in gambling. People are worried that they won’t fully understand and effectively regulate the world of gambling.

Picked by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the new commissioners come from different sectors like law, regulation, health, finance, and civil service. While their expertise in their fields is valuable, critics say that a lack of knowledge about gambling might mean they’re out of touch with the industry.

The absence of commissioners with gambling backgrounds has been a contentious issue. Important people in the industry, like Betfair co-founder Andrew Black, have said that the commission should be like the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and have directors with a finance background. This shows that people think it’s important to understand the industry to regulate it well.

Some of the new commissioners are legal experts Lloydette Bai-Marrow, Helen Dodds, and Claudia Mortimore. Bai-Marrow is an expert in anti-corruption and economic crime law. Dodds used to be the global head of legal and dispute resolution at Standard Chartered Bank. Mortimore has experience in prosecuting crimes related to drugs, tax, and money laundering.

The commission’s board also includes David Rossington, who used to be a civil servant and has been on the commission’s board since the start of the year. Rossington’s experience in the civil service helps with understanding government processes and policymaking.

Even though the new commissioners don’t have direct gambling experience, their different backgrounds give them a fresh perspective on the industry. The commission knows that these people bring experience and knowledge from different sectors, which can help keep gambling fair and safe. But critics say that a deep understanding of the industry is important for good regulation.

One of the appointments that stands out is Sheree Howard, who works at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and has experience in risk management and compliance. Howard might be a bridge between the gambling sector and the successful regulatory model of the FCA.

The industry has mostly welcomed the new commissioners and says that their appointment comes at an important time. Michael Dugher, the chief executive of the Betting and Gaming Council, says that the commissioners need to talk to industry professionals to understand the big operators in the sector.

The news of the new commissioners has also shown the Industry Forum, an idea from the commission’s chair, Marcus Boyle. The forum has people from the gambling industry who can give the commission more insights into what operators think. This shows that the commission wants to connect regulation and industry expertise.

The Gambling Commission is becoming more important as the industry changes. While it’s worrying that there aren’t any commissioners with gambling backgrounds, it also means that new perspectives and approaches can come in. The challenge is finding the right balance between regulation and industry knowledge.

In the next few months, we’ll see how the new commissioners deal with the complexities of the gambling industry and help the commission make things fair and safe. Only time will tell if their different expertise can regulate an industry as complex as gambling effectively.
