Aaron LaBerge

Disney Entertainment and ESPN’s Chief Technology Officer, Aaron LaBerge, has announced his departure from the media giant to join the sports betting company, Penn Entertainment. LaBerge, who played a pivotal role in Disney’s streaming initiatives, including the integration of Hulu and Disney+ into a single app, will also assume the role of Chief Technology Officer at Penn Entertainment, headquartered in Pennsylvania.

Aaron LaBerge’s departure comes after his instrumental contributions to Disney’s streaming success, such as the launch of ESPN+ and the upcoming joint-venture sports streamer from Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros Discovery. Disney has previously partnered with Penn on the ESPN Bet sports betting platform, which launched in multiple states and has seen substantial growth.

In a memo to Disney Entertainment and ESPN staff, co-chairmen Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, along with ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro, revealed that LaBerge’s departure was a personal decision. Chris Lawson, Executive VP of Content Operations for Disney Entertainment and ESPN, will temporarily assume LaBerge’s role while the company searches for a new Chief Technology Officer.

Despite LaBerge’s departure, Disney expressed gratitude for his contributions and leadership over his 20-year tenure. They view his transition to Penn Entertainment as an opportunity for continued growth and success, particularly in relation to ESPN Bet and the rest of their Interactive business.

LaBerge’s move from Disney to the sports betting industry has raised eyebrows within the entertainment and technology sectors. It reflects the increasing convergence between traditional media and the rapidly expanding online gambling space.

Disney’s partnership with Penn Entertainment on the ESPN Bet platform has been a significant step into the world of online sports betting. Launched in November and expanding into additional states, ESPN Bet has capitalized on the growing popularity of sports wagering. The platform provides users with a seamless betting experience within the ESPN ecosystem.
