Djokovic, Federer Not Favored At Wimbledon For First Time Since 2003

For the first time since 2003, a men’s tennis player other than Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer is poised to enter Wimbledon as the betting favorite, according to data from sportsoddshistory.com.

DraftKings lists Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz (+175) as co-betting favorites for this year’s tournament, which begins Monday. FanDuel, one of the many sports betting apps offering odds on Wimbledon, lists Sinner at +175 and Alcaraz at +210.

It’s the first time Djokovic or Federer won’t be the Wimbledon betting favorite in more than two decades. Lleyton Hewitt was the 2003 Wimbledon betting favorite, although he was upset in the first round of that tournament. Federer, who retired from tennis in 2022, went on to win the 2003 Wimbledon title.

Djokovic holds the third-shortest odds on both DraftKings (+400) and FanDuel (+420) for this year’s championship. The 24-time Grand Slam champion withdrew during the French Open earlier this month due to a knee injury. Djokovic had surgery on his knee, creating ongoing questions about his ability to compete for his eighth Wimbledon title in July.

Despite the injury, Djokovic plans to compete in the tournament.

Betting odds suggest Djokovic holds a respectable chance of winning the title, even as he’s dealing with injury. No other players outside Sinner, Alcaraz, and Djokovic hold odds shorter than +1900 (Alexander Zverev) on FanDuel.

For Sinner, winning Wimbledon would be his first second grand slam title. The 22-year-old Italian won this year’s Australian Open, and also made the semifinals of the French Open.

Both Sinner and Alcaraz are rising superstars, with Alcaraz winning this year’s French Open to grab his third career Grand Slam. Alcaraz is also the reigning Wimbledon champion as he outlasted Djokovic in five sets in an epic final a year ago.

Sports betting odds suggest those three favorites are the likeliest champions, with players like Zverev hopeful to surprise experts.

FanDuel lists Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka (+340) as co-betting favorites for the women’s draw, with Elena Rybakina (+550), and Coco Gauff (+650) close behind.

Gauff, an American, won this year’s French Open to secure her second Grand Slam title. She’s yet to advance beyond the fourth round of Wimbledon, however, finding more success at every other Grand Slam championship.

One name worth monitoring with odds longer than +1000 on FanDuel is Ons Jabeur, who holds +1300 odds. She’s made the Wimbledon final in each of the past two years, but has been unable to win. The 29-year-old plays some of her best tennis at Wimbledon and has made at least the Wimbledon quarterfinals in three consecutive years.
