Massachusetts Regulatory Meeting Canceled; Betting Limits Discussion Date TBD
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission planned to meet Wednesday for an agenda-setting meeting, which was expected to include naming an official date for a second sports betting limits discussion. On Tuesday, the MGC announced the meeting was canceled.
The date for a second highly anticipated sports betting limits discussion remains to be determined. However, a date could be set at the MGC’s public meeting on Aug. 15 or its agenda-setting meeting on Aug. 21. The MGC hosted a roundtable discussion about sports betting limits in May, but most well-known sports betting operators skipped the meeting, angering commissioners.
Bally Bet was the only operator to attend the first meeting.
Other betting apps, like DraftKings and FanDuel, have signaled their intent to participate in the second discussion. Some commissioners, however, are still skeptical that operators will share enough information publicly for the conversation to be productive.
Commissioners also plan to include bettors’ perspectives in the discussion, much like the first meeting. Some prominent bettors have vocally shared displeasure with major betting apps for limiting them with minimal to no explanation as to why they’re limited or the reasoning for their specific wagering limit.
The MGC is hopeful the discussion can increase transparency around the practice of limiting sports bettors. In a recent meeting, the commission also hinted at implementing regulations related to the practice.
