Flurry Of NFL Trade Deadline Deals Cause Sportsbooks To Yawn

Trade deadline day in the NFL came and went Tuesday, and with it … not a lot of movement for mobile sportsbooks in the Super Bowl odds market.

Let’s do a quick rundown of the moves — both players and odds. (All odds are from DraftKings.)

Seattle Seahawks: They got the party started Monday when they traded for Giants defensive lineman Leonard Williams to shore up an already — and somewhat surprisingly — stout defense. They sent a 2024 second-rounder and 2025 fifth-rounder for Williams, and as a result their Super Bowl odds went from +3500 to … +3500.

Chicago Bears: The 2-6 Bears were not expected to be buyers at the deadline, but that’s exactly what they became by acquiring Washington Commanders star pass rusher Montez Sweat for a second-round pick. The Bears’ Super Bowl odds remained steady at “not gonna happen” (that’s 400-to-1 for those scoring at home).

Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings acquired Arizona Cardinals quarterback Joshua Dobbs to replace the injured Kirk Cousins. They sent a sixth-round pick to the Cards for Dobbs and a seventh-rounder. The Vikings’ Super Bowl odds have been bouncing like, well, like an errant Joshua Dobbs pass since last week. Pre-Cousins injury, the Vikings were +6500.

Post-Cousins injury, they shot up to +15000. Post-Dobbs trade, they stayed at +15000, and that might be because …

Jacksonville Jaguars: … the Vikings weren’t done, trading stud offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland to the Jags for a third-day pick. The Jags remained steady at +1600 to hoist the Lombardi.

San Francisco 49ers: In the rich-get-richer department, the Niners acquired the other stud Commanders pass rusher on the market, Chase Young, for a third-round pick. The NIners entered the day as +600 to win the Super Bowl, just a hair below the Kansas City Chiefs at +500. After the Young deal, their odds remained the same. Tough crowd out there in the sportsbook streets.

On the trade deadline day, Washington now has moved on from Young and Montez Sweat, once viewed as foundational players.

Detroit Lions: The Lions added a wide receiver to complement Amon-Ra St. Brown in Donovan Peoples-Jones from the Cleveland Browns for a sixth-rounder. Peoples-Jones is expected to stretch the field for Mr. St. Brown and others. And no, this didn’t move the Lions’ odds. They remain at +1100.

And lastly …

Buffalo Bills: The Bills shored up their secondary, trading for Packers cornerback Rasul Douglass for a third-round pick, which didn’t budge the Bills’ +1500 odds.
