As part of the approaching National Problem Gambling Awareness Month, a number of groups in Pennsylvania have teamed up to spread the word about problem gambling. The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), the Pennsylvania Lottery, the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania (CCGP), the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), and an individual in long-term recovery are all partners in this program.

The increasing accessibility of gambling as a result of the growth of gaming alternatives was highlighted by Elizabeth Lanza, PGCB Director of Compulsive and Problem Gambling. She outlined the work being done by the PGCB to promote responsible gaming and give people round-the-clock access to voluntary self-exclusion programs. These initiatives include more self-exclusion outlets and a comprehensive online self-exclusion program system.

Theme and Focus

The theme for this year’s National Problem Gambling Awareness Month is “Every Story Matters,” marking its 21-year anniversary. The focus will be on educating the public about treatment and recovery services while encouraging healthcare providers to screen for problem gambling during client treatment. DDAP Deputy Secretary Kelly Primus stressed the significance of offering resources and raising awareness, stating that knowledge is power and urging Pennsylvanians to familiarize themselves with the signs of problem gambling.

Josh Ercole, Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania, emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs and reaching out for help if needed. He highlighted that while most individuals won’t experience gambling problems, being aware of potential issues and seeking support can make a significant difference in addressing problem gambling effectively.
