Macau March Figures Hit Milestone

Macau’s gaming industry continues to rebound, with the gross gaming revenue (GGR) for March reaching a milestone. According to data released by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), Macau’s GGR amounted to MOP19.50 billion ($2.42 billion), marking a new 49-month high. This reflects a 5.5 percent increase from February’s figures and a slight 0.01 percent increase from the last post-COVID high in October.

The March GGR figures demonstrate a recovery for Macau’s gaming industry. The 53.1 percent increase compared to the previous year indicates a significant bounce back from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is important to note that the current GGR is still 24.5 percent lower than the pre-pandemic levels of March 2019.

The first quarter of 2024 also showed positive growth in Macau’s casino GGR. Despite the ongoing pandemic, the GGR for the quarter reached MOP57.33 billion ($7.12 billion), representing a substantial 65.5 percent increase from the previous year. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that the current figures are still 24.7 percent lower than the first quarter of 2019, which was a record-breaking period for Macau’s gaming industry.

The surge in Macau’s March GGR can be attributed to several factors. One significant factor is the Easter holidays, which fell in late March. Macau experienced an influx of visitors during this period, with a total of 330,000 visitors arriving in the first three days alone. Visitor arrivals peaked on the second day, with 122,000 visitors entering Macau. The increase in tourist traffic volume, particularly from Hong Kong, contributed to the bustling atmosphere in Macau.

While Easter is not a public holiday in Mainland China, it is widely celebrated in Hong Kong and Macau. This distinction has created a unique opportunity for Macau to attract visitors during this period. The proximity of Macau to Hong Kong and the availability of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HKZM Bridge) have facilitated the influx of tourists from Hong Kong. The increase in visitor numbers has brought a positive economic impact to Macau, particularly to the gaming sector.

Macau’s gaming industry has displayed resilience throughout the pandemic. The gradual recovery and the achievement of new post-COVID highs demonstrate the industry’s ability to adapt and overcome challenges. As vaccination efforts continue and travel restrictions ease, Macau’s gaming sector is expected to further rebound and regain its pre-pandemic momentum.

The future prospects for Macau’s gaming industry remain bright. The surge in GGR during the Easter holidays is a positive sign for the recovery of the tourism sector. As more countries achieve higher vaccination rates and travel restrictions are lifted, the number of visitors to Macau is expected to increase steadily. Additionally, the ongoing development of integrated resorts and the diversification of non-gaming offerings will further contribute to Macau’s long-term growth.
