IOC and UEFA come together to protect sports betting integrity

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and UEFA have held a workshop to promote sports betting integrity through cross-sector collaboration for betting entities and International Federations (IFs).

This summer is set to be a busy one in the world of sport, with both the Olympic Games 2024 taking place in Paris and UEFA Euro 2024 taking place in Germany.

As such, a workshop was held to align the approaches of sport organisations and betting entities ahead of these major events so collaboration could take place, and all could learn from each other.

During the day, there were opportunities to listen to presentations from the Olympic Movement Unit on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions (OM Unit PMC) and UEFA’s Anti-Match-Fixing Unit to hear their strategies on maintaining integrity.

Several IFs were present to share their experiences and gain new insights ahead of their respective events, while breakout sessions allowed participants to look at collaboration models between sports organisations and betting entities, also looking at the latest trends in sports betting.

Head of the OM Unit PMC Friedrich Martens said: “Collaboration is essential. During the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, we will work together with a series of betting operators, associations and major betting regulatory authorities to exchange relevant information about irregular betting patterns or suspicious betting activities detected that might imply competition manipulation.”

UEFA Head of Anti-Match-Fixing Vincent Ven added: “The main objective is to ensure robust 24/7 monitoring of the competition to complement our dedicated prevention and education programme for all participating athletes and officials.

“UEFA’s multi-stakeholder Anti-Match-Fixing Assessment Group will manage pre- and in-competition monitoring, ensuring that UEFA can immediately review and address any potential integrity threats to the tournament.”

In other sports betting integrity news, Sportradar has extended its partnership with the Chinese Men’s Professional Basketball League (CBA League).
