Michigan Sets U.S. Internet Casino Revenue Record At $215 Million

The Michigan Gaming Control Board reported $215.2 million in gross internet casino revenue for March, an all-time national monthly high, as the Wolverine State became the first to surpass $200 million in monthly operator winnings.

Revenue was up 25.2% compared to March 2023, when the $171.8 million reported also set an all-time high in Michigan. It was 14.4% higher than February’s $188 million, as March’s total also marked the fifth consecutive month operators extended the all-time record.

Ten of the state’s 15 internet casino operators set all-time monthly highs, with all three Detroit casinos having monthly hauls ranking first or second since launching in January 2021.

The state was eligible to tax $194.5 million in adjusted gross revenue, leading to an inflow of $39.4 million into state coffers. The state has received $103.3 million in taxes from internet casino play through the first quarter of the year, $20.9 million more than the same period in 2023.

The city of Detroit collected $10.3 million in tax receipts — the first time the monthly total topped $10 million — while tribal disbursements also reached an all-time high of $4.7 million.

A change atop the state leaderboard

Detroit’s three commercial online casino platforms topped $100 million in monthly revenue for the first time at $106.6 million, fueled by FanDuel setting an all-time high for operator winnings at $57.6 million through MotorCity Casino. The haul shattered its short-lived record of $48.4 million in February and represented a 68.6% increase from March 2023.

This marked the first time BetMGM did not lead Michigan operators in internet casino revenue since the state launched operations.

FanDuel joined BetMGM as the only operator to clear $50 million in gross revenue for a month. It also moved within $2.3 million of $1 billion in all-time gross winnings and trails BetMGM by $4.3 million in gross revenue through the first three months of 2024.

BetMGM, tethered to MGM Grand, had its second-best month of all-time at $54.7 million, but that was down 2.8% from the previous state record it set in March 2023 at $56.2 million. It was the eighth time BetMGM topped $50 million in monthly winnings, and they have all come in the last 18 months.

Greektown Casino also had its second-best month of all-time with $5.2 million in winnings, trailing only the $6.4 million claimed last December. Year-over-year revenue improved 21.2%. The PENN Entertainment-owned platform has now topped $5 million in three of the last four months.

DraftKings leads a tribal tidal wave

Nine platforms tied to tribal casinos posted all-time highs for monthly revenue, as the group of 12 combined to generate $97.6 million in gross winnings. That easily eclipsed the previous high of $85.5 million set in January and was up 26.7% from March 2023 — an increase of $20.5 million.

DraftKings extended its record for monthly revenue among tribal-tethered operators to $40.4 million, the first time it crossed $40 million. It has set a revenue record every March since launch, starting at $16.6 million in 2021 and progressing to $20.7 million in 2022 and $31.6 million in 2023.

BetRivers had a record haul of $12.8 million, reaching eight figures for the sixth consecutive month. It was the second straight month over $12 million for the platform, with revenue bouncing 40.2% higher compared to March 2023.

Caesars Palace Online, which crossed $10 million in monthly winnings for the first time to start 2024, edged over $11 million as year-over-year revenue surged 58.1%. It was the fifth consecutive month Caesars notched an all-time monthly high, a run that started in November with $9.1 million in revenue.

Fanatics Casino, which entered Michigan in late February via the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Chippewa Indians after migrating its platform from previous licensee and acquisition PointsBet, made a notable entrance with an all-time high of $3.1 million in its first full month of operations. PointsBet’s previous high in the Wolverine State was $2.2 million last October.

Golden Nugget ($7.7 million), Four Winds ($4.3 million), Soaring Eagle ($4.2 million), betPARX ($3.2 million) and Bally’s ($2.5 million) rounded out the group of nine tribal platforms that set all-time monthly highs for revenue.
