DC Lottery and the Office of Lottery and Gaming reported a $15.8 million sports betting handle from all licensees in March, the last full month GambetDC served as the primary app in the nation’s capital.

FanDuel became the district’s official primary sports betting app Monday, with the district hoping the industry leader in the United States can provide the type of action and eventual tax revenue long sought but rarely seen with predecessor Intralot and GambetDC.

Intralot, though, is still part of the D.C. sports betting scene, as it subcontracted FanDuel to be the lottery’s primary sportsbook. Its contract with DC Lottery expires in July, though DC Lottery suggested Intralot receive a two-year extension at a district council meeting earlier this month.

There is a bill proposal from district council member Kenyan McDuffie that would greatly expand mobile sports betting access as both BetMGM and Caesars are restricted to two-block radiuses around their retail locations at Nationals Park and Capital One Arena, respectively. FanDuel also has a retail presence as the official sportsbook of MLS club D.C. United at Audi Field.

March handle was down 12.9% from last year, while sports betting revenue plunged 40% to $1.4 million as operators posted a collective 8.7% hold. The district collected $135,764 in tax revenue for the month, and the $451,723 for the first three months of 2024 is $53,910 less than in the same period last year.

Revenue for the first quarter was down 9% to $4.5 million, a softer decline than handle since the 10.3% hold attained across the district is nearly a full percentage point higher than in the same span last year.

GambetDC incurred the wrath of bettors and government officials alike — the former rarely pleased with price points and a wonky platform, and the latter due to missed tax revenue projections as the result of an unpopular app.

Despite those problems, it still was the top generator of both handle and volume of tickets written in the nation’s capital this year. After posting a 5.7% hold on a $6.9 million handle in March, GambetDC’s $19.4 million year-to-date handle represented 44.3% of the $43.6 million in wagers placed.

Overall, it posted a 13.4% win rate against a $211.8 million handle to collect $28.3 million in revenue. The nearly 559,000 bets accepted for the first three months of 2024 accounted for more than 60% of all tickets written, and GambetDC had slightly more than half of the 13.2 million bets placed all-time in the district.

Caesars paced all Class A licensees in revenue with $655,302 thanks to a 14% hold from $4.7 million worth of bets. Despite a 38.2% drop in year-to-date handle in the first quarter to $12.4 million, its $1.6 million in revenue is down only 8.5% thanks to a 13.2% hold through the first three months of 2024.

BetMGM and FanDuel combined for close to $266,000 in revenue, with BetMGM accounting for $223,500 of that amount on a 6.6% hold against a $3.4 million handle.

The number of Class B licensees in the district doubled to four in March, as Grand Central unveiled its second location on H Street, while FanDuel began taking wagers via kiosks at Sports & Social DC on U Street.

Both had promising starts with 20%-plus holds in limited action. Grand Central claimed $12,154 in revenue on a 22.9% win rate, averaging $154.16 per wager on 345 bets. Sports & Social DC had a 29.4% hold to collect $8,870 and averaged $27.84 from the 1,083 bets placed.

Grand Central’s other location in Adams Morgan posted a double-digit hold for the fifth straight month, landing at 13.4% while winning $29,723 of the $222,511 wagered. The Cloakroom eked out a small win of $359 with a sub-1% hold on $38,055. After a rough 2023, the strip club is still $43,892 in the red overall with a -9.9% hold from $444,147 worth of wagers.
