Pennsylvania’s sports betting for the month of April 2024 saw the handle in the state fall to $646.1 million, a decline from the previous month’s $800.7 million.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board’s recent data release saw $646.1 million handle represents a 13% year-over-year increase compared to the $572.2 million recorded in the same period in 2023, the month-over-month decline is the third consecutive monthly decline in the category since December’s impressive $925.6 million handle.

Despite the lower handle, Pennsylvania sportsbooks still managed to cash in on a healthy revenue stream. The state’s operators generated $59 million in revenue during April, marking a 9.1% statewide hold. This figure, although a month-over-month decline from March’s $63.7 million, still represents a year-over-year increase from the $51.8 million recorded in April 2023.

The Keystone State’s coffers also benefited from this sports betting activity, with the state collecting $14.4 million in tax revenue last month. This contribution is part of the cumulative $64 million in taxes generated for Pennsylvania from sports betting so far in 2024, alongside the $270.9 million in total revenue for the state’s sportsbooks.

Pennsylvania’s sports betting market is renowned for its robust online and retail presence, a dynamic that continues to shape the industry’s landscape. In April 2024, the online segment dominated the market, with online sportsbooks tallying a $608.3 million handle, while retail sportsbooks collected $37.8 million in wagers.

This disparity highlights the growing preference for online sports betting in the Keystone State, a trend mirrored across the country. However, Pennsylvania’s retail sports betting sector remains a significant contributor, accounting for approximately 6% of the total handle – a relatively high percentage compared to some other states.

The leading online sportsbook operators in Pennsylvania maintained their dominance in April 2024. FanDuel emerged as the clear market leader, boasting a $269.6 million online handle and $32.2 million in revenue. DraftKings followed closely with a $167 million online handle and $14 million in revenue.

The remaining online sportsbooks in the state, including ESPN BET, BetMGM, and BetRivers, generated significantly lower handles and revenues, underscoring the duopoly held by FanDuel and DraftKings. Fanatics Sportsbook, a relative newcomer to the market, managed to surpass the $1 million revenue mark in its first few months of operation.

While the sports betting industry experienced a seasonal downturn, Pennsylvania’s online casino market continued to thrive. In April 2024, the state’s iGaming sector generated a remarkable $173.4 million in monthly gross revenue, a 26.4% increase from the same period in 2023. This robust performance translated into $75.6 million in tax revenue for the state.

The overall gaming landscape in Pennsylvania, including both sports betting and iGaming, witnessed a combined revenue of $504.7 million in April 2024, a nearly 6% increase compared to the previous year. This multifaceted growth underscores the state’s position as a powerhouse in the evolving world of legalized gambling.
