The Colorado Division of Gaming has announced a $509.5 million handle for the month of April 2024. This figure, while representing a 14.09% month-over-month decline from March.

Despite the slight dip in April, Colorado’s sports betting industry has demonstrated its ability to generate encouraging numbers. The total handle in the state has reached $5.2 billion, marking a 16.41% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

The fluctuations in monthly sports betting handles are not uncommon, as the industry often experiences ebbs and flows influenced by various factors. In the case of April 2024, the $509.5 million handle represents a 21.95% increase from the total handle recorded in April 2023, indicating that the overall trend remains positive.

One of the key drivers behind Colorado’s sports betting success is the dominance of online platforms. In April 2024, the total online handle reached $507.1 million, dwarfing the $2.4 million generated by retail sportsbooks. This trend highlights the growing preference among bettors for the convenience and accessibility of online sports betting.

While online sports betting continues to flourish, the retail sportsbook segment in Colorado has faced some challenges. April 2024 marked the lowest monthly handle for retail sportsbooks, with a mere $2.4 million in bets placed. This figure also represents the lowest retail handle since August 2023, underscoring the need for retail operators to adapt to the evolving market dynamics.

Colorado’s sports betting industry has also seen fluctuations in sportsbook profitability. In April 2024, online sportsbooks managed to generate $32.2 million in gross gaming revenue, thanks to a 6.35% win percentage. On the other hand, retail sportsbooks in the state actually experienced a loss of $160,166.41, with a -6.77% hold.

The performance of Colorado’s sports betting industry is also influenced by seasonal patterns and sports-specific trends. For instance, pro basketball has consistently been the dominant sport in terms of betting handle, with $169.6 million in wagers placed in April 2024. This can be attributed to the ongoing NBA season and the excitement surrounding the sport’s popularity.

The sports betting activity in Colorado has also generated substantial tax revenue for the state. In April 2024, the industry contributed $1.9 million in taxes, underperforming the $2.9 million collected in March and the $2.6 million from April 2023. However, the year-to-date tax revenue has reached a healthy $25.4 million, representing a 10.85% increase from the same period last year.
