After less than two years in the role, Mark McWhinnie, the outgoing Sydney CEO of Crown Resorts, has announced his retirement. McWhinnie, who had previously been retired for two years before joining Crown, was tasked with leading the reform of the group’s Sydney operations. This came in the wake of a finding by the NSW Independent Casino Commission that deemed Crown Resorts unsuitable to hold a license due to concerns over money laundering. However, the company was eventually permitted to retain the license for its harbourside casino in Sydney earlier this year.

Ciaran Carruthers, Crown’s group chief executive, praised McWhinnie’s leadership, stating that it had been “instrumental in evolving” the business and that the company looks forward to “continuing that focus” under its new chief. McWhinnie’s departure paves the way for a new leader to take the helm in Sydney, as Crown embarks on the next chapter of its journey.

Amidst the leadership changes, David Tsai, the former CEO of Crown’s Perth operations, has been promoted to a new, national role within the company. Tsai, who had been in his previous position for less than two years, has now been appointed as the President and Group Chief Operating Officer of Crown Resorts.

In his new capacity, Tsai will report directly to Crown’s group chief executive, Ciaran Carruthers, who expressed delight in announcing the executive’s expanded responsibilities. Tsai’s promotion underscores the strategic importance of the Perth operations within the Crown Resorts portfolio, as the company seeks to leverage his expertise and leadership on a broader scale.

With Tsai’s ascension to the national role, Crown Resorts has appointed Brian Pereira, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, to serve as the interim CEO of the Perth operations. Pereira, who was previously the CFO at Perth Airport, will assume this responsibility subject to regulatory approval.

The interim nature of Pereira’s appointment suggests that Crown is conducting a “global search” to fill the permanent CEO position in Perth, reflecting the company’s commitment to identifying the right leader to guide its Western Australian operations.
