According to a comprehensive survey by the American Gaming Association (AGA), 55% of American adults reported participating in some form of legal gambling over the past year.

The surge in gambling participation can be attributed to several key factors. Firstly, the expansion of legalized gambling across the country has made it more accessible than ever before. Where once it was largely confined to Nevada and New Jersey, casino gaming and other forms of legalized gambling have now spread to most states, with over 1,000 commercial and tribal casinos nationwide.

Another remarkable trend revealed by the AGA survey is the declining average age of casino participants. After peaking at 49.6 in 2019, the average age of casino-goers has steadily decreased, reaching 41.9 in 2024. This suggests that younger generations are increasingly embracing gambling as a form of entertainment, a significant departure from the traditional perception of the industry being dominated by older demographics.

The AGA survey also highlights a remarkable shift in public attitudes towards gambling. When asked to share their views, a staggering 88% of respondents said that gambling is “acceptable for me and others” or “acceptable for others, but not for me personally.” This represents a significant increase from 2009, when only around 81% of respondents held such favourable views.

Moreover, the survey found that the vast majority of Americans (85%) believe that the casino gambling industry has a positive impact on the U.S. economy, while 76% see the industry as a growing and thriving sector.

As the demand for gambling continues to surge, the industry is poised for further expansion into new markets and verticals. Las Vegas Sands, for instance, is spearheading efforts to bring a casino to the lucrative Texas-Fort Worth area, while New York City, the nation’s largest metropolitan area, is set to award up to three casino licenses by next year.
