The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, announced, Macau’s September GGR declined by 12.7% month-on-month, reaching just MOP17.25 billion (approximately US$2.15 billion). This figure represents the lowest monthly GGR tally recorded so far this year, a stark contrast to the robust growth seen in the preceding months.

The plunge in Macau’s September GGR can be attributed to a confluence of factors, each playing a crucial role in shaping the region’s gaming dynamics.

One of the primary contributors to the revenue decline was the passage of a powerful super typhoon, “Yagi,” which disrupted tourism and general travel to Macau in early September. The storm’s impact rippled through the city’s casino resorts, affecting not only gaming activities but also non-gaming services.

Beyond the immediate impact of natural disasters, Macau’s gaming industry has also grappled with broader macroeconomic headwinds. The global economic landscape, marked by inflationary pressures and geopolitical uncertainties, has undoubtedly influenced consumer spending patterns and dampened the appetite for high-stakes gambling.

Despite the disappointing September performance, Macau’s gaming industry has exhibited a mixed bag of results when viewed from a year-to-date perspective.

Compared to the same period in 2023, Macau’s GGR for the first nine months of 2024 has increased by 31.3%, reaching MOP169.36 billion.
