The MGM Osaka project is part of a broader initiative to establish integrated resorts in Japan, aiming to attract tourists and boost the local economy. This lavish undertaking is set to include a casino, hotels, and various entertainment facilities, all designed to provide an immersive experience for visitors.

The development is spearheaded by a consortium that includes MGM Resorts International and Japan’s Orix Corporation. These industry giants bring a wealth of experience in hospitality and entertainment, ensuring that the resort meets international standards while catering to local preferences.

The estimated cost of the MGM Osaka project is approximately JPY 1.27 trillion (around USD 8.52 billion). This substantial investment underscores the confidence stakeholders have in the potential of the integrated resort to generate significant revenue and create jobs in the region.

As of October 15, 2024, preparatory construction has officially commenced. This phase includes essential groundwork, such as setting up a temporary site office and establishing electrical power supply for the construction activities.

The main construction is slated to begin in April 2025, with completion expected by spring 2030. The resort is anticipated to open its doors to the public in autumn 2030, marking a significant milestone for Osaka’s tourism sector.

The MGM Osaka resort will be situated on Yumeshima Island, a reclaimed land area in Osaka Bay.

The project is part of Osaka’s broader urban development strategy, which aims to enhance the city’s appeal as a global tourism hub. The integrated resort is expected to complement other attractions and infrastructure developments in the area.

As with any large-scale construction project, environmental considerations are paramount. The MGM Osaka consortium is committed to implementing sustainable practices throughout the construction and operational phases.

Efforts are underway to minimize the environmental impact of the construction. This includes utilizing eco-friendly materials and technologies, as well as ensuring that the resort incorporates green spaces and energy-efficient systems.

During the construction phase, thousands of jobs will be created, ranging from skilled labour to administrative positions. Once operational, the resort will continue to provide employment opportunities in various sectors, including hospitality, entertainment, and retail.

The Osaka prefectural and city governments have already signed an implementation agreement with Osaka IR KK. This agreement outlines the terms of the project, including land use and lease arrangements.

The consortium has secured a 35-year lease on a 46-hectare parcel of land, with a monthly rent of JPY 210.7 million. This lease is subject to re-evaluation every five years, allowing for adjustments based on market conditions.
