Illinois Recognises One Application for Online Sports Betting License

The US state of Illinois has identified only one potential candidate for an online sports betting license in the form of DGC IL, which is a subsidiary of Las Vegas-based Digital Gaming Corp. It is second time lucky for the company that dropped out of the application process last year.

DGC IL acquired in the meantime Super Group the UK based sports betting company and through its US Super Group Holding leased it to Betway.

Now the Illinois Gaming Board has said that the company was the only suitable candidate to move forward to now have stringent tests and evaluations

Should DGC IL gain the license which will cost $20 million it will allow for online sports betting only as the state has already granted land based operators licenses such as casino, sports venues and racetracks to which there are currently nine operating.

Last year the state allowed applications for online sports betting only but following the vetting process none of those applying made it to the final stage.

Gaming Board administrator Marcus Fruchter said this week on the process now for DGC IL: “Being found qualified and identified as the winning bidder are neither a finding of suitability nor a grant of licensure, it’s simply a finding based on information presently known by the Gaming Board, that the applicant and its key persons meet the minimum suitability criteria.”

Illinois is one of the top sports betting states in the country in revenues regularly topping the $1 billion a month since it launched in March 2020 and is only behind New York in terms of revenues generated.

It is understood that should DGC IL be successful the state will again open applications next year for the two remaining available online sports betting licenses.
